Orang Utan

A-two and a half hour drive from Medan, about 96 km, travelling westward from Medan, pass through the towns Binjai, Kuala and Bahorok you will reach a small village called Bukit Lawang. It is another 25 minutes walk from Rindu Alam Hotel along the clear Bahorok river side the boat (Canoe) crossing of the Center of Orang Utan Rehabilitation Station. The Center is opened between 08.00 AM and 15.00PM daily for visitors.

For more than 40 years, it has been illegal to own an orang utan in Indonesia. The orang utans you will see at the center have either been confiscated by P.P.A. (The Nature Conservation Department of Indonesia) or donated the project by former owners. After a period of quarantine and necessary medical treatment, they are released and learn to feed themselves in the forest. For a while they still need extra food and come to the feeding site at appointed time 08.00AM or 15.00PM when you can observe their activities. At the feeding site they can get the bananas or milk if they are still young. It they could find enough food in the forest, then they may not come for few days. When they are fully capable of looking after themselves, they will be taken away from the center and released far into the reserve.

All foreign visitors must get the permits for visiting the center. The permit could be obtained at the P.P.A. office on the spot. For further information, please contact the information of Rindu Alam Hotel.
